Lead With Love in the way you speak to yourself.

Would you speak to yourself the way you speak to a friend?

Who’s Talking in There?
Your internal dialogue shapes your emotional landscape more than almost anything else.

We all have a narrating voice in our minds—a stream of inner commentary that can either soothe us or shame us, support us or sabotage us.

This voice isn’t random.
It’s shaped by early attachment, past relationships, and internalised authority figures.

In psychoanalytic terms, this voice often reflects the superego—a part of the psyche formed through parental, cultural, and moral expectations.
When harsh or punitive, it can become the inner critic—a voice that echoes judgment, perfectionism, or fear of failure.

🔬 What the Science Says:

🧠 Research shows that harsh self-talk is linked to higher levels of cortisol, reduced emotional resilience, and greater symptoms of depression and anxiety.

💬 On the other hand, self-compassionate inner speech is associated with increased vagal tone, improved emotion regulation, and reduced amygdala reactivity (i.e. less threat response).

🧠 Functional MRI studies have also found that negative self-talk activates the same neural pathways as social rejection, suggesting that we can literally hurt ourselves with our thoughts.
